Importance of Titanium 6al-4v eli and AMS 4928

We are talking about the titanium alloy, which is often used for many important things. This very useful alloy is generally known as titanium 6al-4v eli alloy. The main constituents as the name suggests are aluminium and vanadium. The word ELI here suggests that it is an ‘extra low interstitial’, that means it is of high purity.

This alloy is specifically put to use in medical usage as well as aerospace applications. The uses can be,
  • Medical implants as well as dental filling. This is due to the biocompatibility that the alloy exhibits which makes it perfect for placing it internally in human body. This alloy is corrosion free hence it is safe to use inside a human body.
  • These days in the cases of fractures, dental filling, supporting a bone in the body is done with the help of the rods and screws that are made out of this alloy.
  • The inside conditions of a human body are generally acidic. Hence, it is very important that the product we use inside should be corrosion free, which would not harm when placed inside and thus titanium 6al-4v eli alloy is best suited.
  • Affinity towards oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen can be seen in this alloy.
  • It can form an alpha case, when heated in air. Thus, it is heated in the absence of any gas or to say in vacuum.
  • The low elastic modulus makes it similar with the actual bones of the body.
Therefore, it gives an edge over any other metal used in medical field. One of the applicable specifications of the aforementioned titanium alloy is AMS 4928. This is in the form of a rod. The characteristics of this product are the following,
  • It has less density.
  • It has got resistance ho high temperature, thus a great thermal stability.
  • AMS 4928 is corrosion resistant hence it is best suited for medical implants, or aerospace usage.
  • It is got a high specific strength.
  • It can be used in petrochemical engineering, aviation, salt making, etc.
  • It has got very high strength and low density.
  • It comes in light weight; therefore for medical usage it is most appropriate.
  • AMS 4928 can be given a form of bars, forgings or billets.
  • The constituents in it are Iron-0.3% and hydrogen-0.0125%.
  • It does not catch rust easily.
  • It is got a good thermal conductivity, and has got plasticity.
